Overview

This course develops students’ ability to design, model, test, and improve functional 3D prototypes using digital CAD tools. Students move beyond basic shape construction into intermediate modeling skills such as precision measurement, tolerances, assemblies, modular design, sustainability, ergonomics, and product improvement.

What You’ll Learn?

Understand the process of transforming an idea into a functional product design
Apply intermediate 3D design thinking to create meaningful solutions
Develop precision CAD skills using measurements, constraints, and tolerances
Design functional objects with accurate dimensions and reliable assembly features
Prepare models for 3D printing by considering strength, supports, and print requirements
Create mechanical and modular designs with moving or interlocking components
Apply engineering principles to design structures and evaluate their performance
Improve prototypes through testing, iteration, and design refinement
Redesign existing products using sustainability and user-centered design principles
Develop solutions for real-world needs through community and accessibility-focused projects
Document the design process from concept to final prototype

Requirements

Basic 3D modeling knowledge is recommended
Basic understanding of measurements and design concepts is recommended
Access to a computer with suitable modeling software
Students should follow the product development process:
Identify → Design → Model → Prototype → Test → Improve → Present
Students should consider:
Functionality
Accuracy
User needs
Material limitations
Manufacturing requirements
